PARIS -- We know how No. 1 Roger Federer and No. 2 Rafael Nadal feel about ATP chairman Etienne de Villiers. To be less than brutal, let's say they're not de Villiers fans.
But what about No. 3 Novak Djokovic? Isn't it about time we got the Serbian on the record as de Villiers continues to parry the heat being brought by petitions and demands that he get the players more involved in decision making? And the carefully worded suggestion that other candidates for the top job be examined before anyone decides to extend de Villiers' contract into 2009 and beyond?
So I put it to Djokovic today and he looked taken aback. I think he's used to the usual questions about his favorite flowers, favorite rock band and how high his confidence is (…).
But then he recovered, as he did several times during matches on the way to the Australian Open title, and replied: "Well, this is something I think is not about myself individually. It's about all the players. I think we need to . . . (pause, thinking). . .the main thing is we need to unite as players."
Now comes a real head-scratcher. "We really don't care too much who is at the top, really. If it's Etienne or somebody else, it's mainly about the players. We have to stand for our decisions and we have to unite ourselves and get together and talk about the issues. That's all."
The attempt at diplomacy here is pretty apparent, but I think there are a couple things that give away Djokovic's real feelings.
To begin with, if he supports what de Villiers has been doing the last three years, he would have given him a vote of confidence. Bang. Just like that. He didn't.
I'm real confused about his remark about not caring who's at the top. They're paying the chairman close to $1 million a year with benefits and bonuses to lead this men's tour into a new age. That's not figurehead money. Of course it matters who's at the top.
But by saying "we really don't care too much who is at the top," isn't this a backhanded way of saying we're ready to show de Villiers the door when his contract is up? Of course it is.

Djokovic sul futuro di De Villiers

PARIGI – Sappiamo benissimo cosa pensino il n. 1 Roger Federer e il n. 2 Rafael Nadal del presidente dell’ATP Etienne de Villiers. Per non essere brutali, potrei dire che non sono suoi fan.
Ma cosa ne pensa il No. 3 Novak Djokovic? E’da molto tempo ormai che il serbo è sulla cresta dell’onda, mentre de Villiers continua a evitare di scaldare gli animi, rispondendo che coinvolgerà di più i giocatori nelle decisioni da prendere. E la proposta appena accennata che i candidati alla massima carica siano esaminati prima che qualcuno decida di estendere il contratto di de Villiers fino a oltre il 2009?

Così oggi ho girato la domanda a Djokovic e lui è sembrato sorpreso. Penso che sia abituato a ricevere sempre le solite domande sui suoi fiori preferiti, sul gruppo rock che ami di più, su quanto forte sia la sua fiducia (…).
Ma poi si è ripreso, come ha già fatto molte volte durante le partite per conquistare l’Australian Open, e ha risposto: “Beh, è qualcosa che non riguarda me personalmente, riguarda tutti i giocatori. Penso che dovremmo… (pausa, ci pensa un po’). La cosa principale è che dovremmo essere uniti”.
Ora arriva il vero grattacapo. “In realtà a noi non interessa molto chi sia in carica, se Etienne o qualcun altro. Si tratta dei giocatori. Dobbiamo sostenere le nostre decisioni, dobbiamo riunirci e discutere i nostri problemi. Tutto qui”.
Il tentativo diplomatico qui è abbastanza chiaro, ma penso che ci siano un paio di cose che tradiscono i veri sentimenti di Djokovic.
Tanto per cominciare, se avesse approvato ciò che de Villiers ha fatto negli ultimi tre anni, gli avrebbe dato il suo voto di fiducia. Bang! Proprio così, non l’ha fatto.
Sono davvero confuso sulla sua dichiarazione di non interessarsi a chi sia in carica. Paghiamo al presidente circa un milione di dollari all’anno, tra compensi e bonus, per condurre il tour maschile verso una nuova era. Non è un incarico solo rappresentativo. Certo che importa chi sia in carica!
Ma dire “a noi in realtà non interessa molto chi sia in carica”, non è solo un modo ambiguo per dire cha siamo pronti a mostrare la porta a de Villiers una volta scaduto il suo contratto? Ovviamente si.
