Borg's tactless remarks, Djokovic's calling out and opening thoughts – Borg senza tatto, Djokovic sul sentiero di guerra ed altri pensieri

Borg's recent comments about Federer (that Federer is the third favorite to win Wimbledon and that he wouldn't be surprised if Federer calls it quits if he loses), strike me as being at best, tactless, and at worst, bitter. In contrast, Sampras' repeated assertions that Federer may well break Sampras' record of 14 majors seem much more sportsmanlike. Your thoughts? Am I just being an over-sensitive Fed fan?

• First, good for you to be so willing to consider the possibility that you might be overreacting. Borg's remarks struck me as oddly uncharitable -- your description of "tactless," is fair. But I don't think it's bitterness. Just one man's opinion. He was asked a question and responded honestly, however ridiculous the speculation might sound. (Remember, two weeks, Borg seemed to be tipping Federer to beat Nadal in Paris because Federer had "tactics.") Federer, I thought, had a perfect reaction. Asked about the Borg call-out, he said: "That's how quickly things change, you know. I mean, look, it's his opinion. I don't mind what he says. Obviously at the moment he has a microphone under his face and people ask him many, many things. Once he'll sound more critical, once he'll sound more positive. But it doesn't change much for me. I like when it's praise. When it's something else, when it's more critical, you tend to just forget about it and move on, so..."
I was happy to see Novak Djokovic's recent "calling out" of Roger Federer, commenting how Federer was vulnerable and there were players, including himself, nipping at Federer's heels. It's about time someone remembered that this was a professional, competitive sport and isn't afraid to speak out against Federer and tell it like it is. The past four years have been nothing but constant butt-kissing by the media and fellow players regarding Roger and it's refreshing and exciting to see a player assert himself and have the belief that he could take down his highness. Go, Novak.

• I think that's going a bit far. But I agree that it's not the worst thing that a player has stood up and finally challenged The Mighty Fed. ("Pack a lunch, Rog, 'cause I'm going to be here all day, bubba.") There's something to be said for sportsmanship but sometimes it seemed like men's tennis had a collective case of Stockholm Syndrome, weirdly fond of their tormentor. Even today, did anyone catch Dominik Hrbaty pulling up a seat and sitting down next to Federer during the changeover? Djokovic is losing the PR war and it's probably for good reason. But I have a hard time whacking him around too much for his matter-of-fact ambitions.
Can you do a little explaining in regards to the seedings at Wimbledon? Why was Baghdatis moved up so many spots, yet Roddick was left at No. 6 behind Ferrer and Davydenko? Why weren't Serena and especially Venus moved up in the seedings?

• Contrary to popular belief, these seedings aren't random. For the men, there is a formula that takes rankings and grasscourt results, etc. into account, You can find it on the Wimbledon website. The results can seem counterintuitive but it's not as if it's subjective. As for the women, the seeds just follow the rankings. Hence, Jelena Jankovic is above Maria Sharapova, though Sharapova is a more accomplished grasscourt player.
Irony: there was a time when the Slams desperately needed to depart from the rankings when the seedings were made. Players such as Marcelo Rios or Sergi Bruguera were "overseeded" on grass. They would go out early, the draw would open up, and the second week was filled with "surprised quarterfinalists." Today -- when there finally is refined seeding -- players are much more complete and the "formula" isn't as necessary.

Mi hanno colpito molto i recenti commenti di Borg su Federer ( che sarebbe solo il terzo favorito a Wimbledon, e non sarebbe sorpeso se si ritirasse, in caso di sconfitta). Mi sembra, nelle migliore delle ipotesi, una mancanza di tatto, e nella peggiore, puro rancore. Al contrario, l’atteggiamento di Sampras, che continua a dichiararsi convinto che Roger possa superare il suo record di 14 titoli di Grand Slam, mi sembra molto più sportivo. Cosa ne pensa? Sono per caso solo una ultra sensibile fan di Federer?

Prima di tutto, apprezzo il fatto che lei prenda in considerazione l’ipotesi che stia un po’ esagerando. L e dichiarazioni di Borg mi hanno colpito in quanto stranamente impietose – la sua descrizione “senza tatto” va benissimo. Però non penso sia rancore. Giusto la sua opinione. Gli è stata fatta una domanda e lui ha risposto onestamente, per quanto ridicole le sue supposizioni possano apparire ( ricordate che due settimane fa sempre Borg aveva dato Federer vincente a Parigi su Nadal, perché Federer aveva” tattica”). La reazione di federer, penso sia stata perfetta. Dovendo commentare le affermazioni di Borg, ha risposto: “ Ecco come cambiano velocemente le cose! Voglio dire,è la sua opinione, non mi da fastidio quello che dice. Ad un certo momento ha un microfono davanti, e la gente gli fa tante domande. Una volta può sembrare più critico, altre volte più ottimistico. Però questo non cambia niente per me. Fa piacere quando mi loda. Quando invece si tratta di critiche, si tende piuttosto a rimuoverle, e andare avanti...
Sono stato felice di sentire Novak Djokovic “ sfidando “ Roger Federer, i suoi commenti su quanto fosse vulnerabile Federer e sul fatto che ci sono dei giocatori, lui compreso, che gli mettono pressione. Era ora che qualcuno si ricordasse che questo è uno sport professionistico e competitivo, e non ha paura di fare affermazioni contro Federer, dire le cose come sono. Gli ultimi quattro anni media e giocatori non hanno fatto altro che osannare Federer, è bello vedere finalmente un giocatore farsi valere e credere nelle sue possibilità di detronizzare la Sua Altezza. Vai, Novak!

Penso lei stia un po’ esagerando. Però ammetto che non è proprio la peggior cosa che un giocatore si alzi in piedi e sfidi finalmente rè Federer. C’è qualcosa da dire sulla sportività però a volte sembrava che il tennis maschile fosse affetto dalla sindrome di Stoccolma, tutti morbosamente attaccati al loro tormentatore. Anche oggi, avete visto Dominik Hrbaty sedendosi accanto a Federer al cambio campo? Djokovic sta perdendo la guerra delle Publiche Relazione, e probabilmente ci sono dei buoni motivi. Però è difficile attaccarlo troppo per le sue pratiche ambizioni.
Può spiegarci come vengono stabilite le teste di serie a Wimbledon? Perché Baghdatis è stato spostato molto in alto, mentre Roddick rimane sesto dietro Ferrer e Davydenko? Perché Serena e specialmente Venus non sono state accreditate teste di serie più alte?

Contrario a quanto generalmente si crede, le teste di serie non sono stabilite a caso. C’è una formula che prende in considerazione il ranking, i risultati sull’erba ecc. La si può trovare sul sito del torneo. I risultati possono sembrare poco sensati, però non sono soggettivi. Per quanto riguarda le donne, si segue semplicemente la classifica. Di conseguenza, Jankovic è davanti a Sharapova, anche se la russa è una giocatrice più completa sull’erba.
Ironia della sorte: una volta i tornei di Grand Slam avevano disperato bisogno di un metodo per assegnare le teste di serie indipendentemente dal ranking. Giocatori come Marcello Rios e Sergi Bruguera erano “sopravalutati” sull’erba. Di conseguenza uscivano presto, il tabellone si apriva e negli quarti arrivavano tanti “giocatori sorpresa”. Adesso – che finalmente l’assegnazione delle teste di serie si fa in un modo più elaborato – i giocatori sono diventati molto più completi e la “formula” non è più tanto necessaria.
