The most recent interviews with Roger Federer have been conducted as if one was participating in a fireside chat, with the Wimbledon champion dressed in smoking jacket, sipping on a brandy. So what should the approach be this time — to hell with it, let’s cut straight to the French Open final? Or lull him into Wimbledon first and then surreptitiously slip Paris in the conversation? The wound was so recent and so deep.
As I mulled these things over, the five-times champion glided in, slipped into one of the All England Club’s superior leather sofas and if the expectation was of finding someone whose brain was mush after the worst performance in terms of games won by a world No 1 in the history of grand-slam finals, who had been finally cowed by slavering critics, or was concerned that he is about to become the victim of a lawn mowing, then I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong man.
“For me, this is a very, very special place and it’s nice to pass those feelings on to somebody else,” he says. “I came here first in the juniors, in 1998, when I was one of so many, but now I am the one.”
He knows his place, does the man. “Winning the singles title once was incredible because this is Wimbledon, the most important, and then two becomes three and then four and then five and five is definitely a different league again. Six would be extraordinary and I have a great opportunity.” (…)
Rafa will be the favourite in Paris for years to come, but why should I not believe I can beat him? A player who has won 12 grand slams can never go into a final thinking, ‘What’s the point?’ I never will. On any given day, on any surface, against any player, I am the favourite.

Le più recenti interviste con Roger Federer sono state condotte come se uno stesse partecipando a una chiacchierata davanti al camino, col campione di Wimbledon vestito in giacca da smoking, sorseggiando brandy. Quindi quale dovrebbe essere l’approccio stavolta – al diavolo, tagliamo corto e parliamo della finale del Roland Garros? O indugiare prima su Wimbledon e poi subdolamente infilare Parigi nella conversazione? La ferita è ancora così fresca e così profonda.
Mentre rimuginavo su queste cose, il cinque volte campione scivolava via, sprofondava su uno dei sofà di pelle dell’ All England Club e se l’aspettativa era di trovare qualcuno col cervello in pappa dopo la peggiore performance, in termini di game vinti da un N.1 nella storia delle finali di slam, in fine abbattuto dalle critiche avvilenti, o preoccupato di essere sul punto di diventare la vittima di un tosaerba, allora mi trovavo nel posto sbagliato, nel momento sbagliato, con l’uomo sbagliato. “Questo per me è un posto davvero speciale ed è bello trasmettere queste sensazioni a qualcun altro” dice. “Sono venuto qui per la prima volta tra i giovani nel 1998, quando ero uno dei tanti, ma adesso sono il numero uno”.
Sa il fatto suo, il ragazzo. “Vincere il titolo in singolo la prima volta è stato incredibile, perché questo è Wimbledon, il più importante, e poi la seconda e poi la terza e la quarta e la quinta, e cinque è decisamente una cosa diversa. Sei sarebbe straordinario e io ho una grande opportunità”. (…)
“Rafa sarà il favorito a Parigi per anni, ma perché io non dovrei pensare di poterlo battere? Un giocatore che ha vinto 12 slam non può mai andare a una finale pensando ‘A che serve?’, io non lo farò mai.
