Lindsay Davenport’s welcome-back present at Wimbledon was a first-round match on the Graveyard, otherwise known as Court 2.
It is a grassy place that will no longer bear that number next year, when a new, grander Court 2 stadium will be inaugurated nearby on the same southern end of the All England Club. But for one more summer at least, the skeletons are still rattling around the baseline on a slippery tennis stage where in recent years the high-profile victims have included Davenport’s rivals, Serena Williams and Venus Williams.
Another surprise hardly seemed out of the question after the 110th-ranked Czech Renata Voracova saved a match point before winning the second set, and then got the confidence boost of watching Davenport stretched out on the grass receiving treatment on her right knee before the start of the third.
But Davenport, even at age 32 and even as a part-time player with a 1-year-old son, can still generate as much flat pace as anyone when she gets her long limbs in position. And once she picked herself off the grass, there would be no adding to the Graveyard’s lore as Davenport prevailed, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Come benvenuto per il suo ritorno a Wimbledon, Lindsay Davenport ha ricevuto un primo turno sul Cimitero dei Campioni, altrimenti conosciuto come campo n. 2.

Un luogo erboso che l'anno prossimo non si vedrà più attribuito questo numero, perché un nuovo, e più grande campo n. 2 sarà inaugurato, non lontano da lì, nello stesso lato meridionale dell'All England Club. Ma almeno per un'estate ancora, gli scheletri possono cigolarsi sulla linea di fondo di questo infido palcoscenico tennistico, dove negli ultimi anni le vittime di alto livello hanno incluso le rivali della Davenport, Serena Williams e Venus Williams.

E un'altra sorpresa sembrava ormai cosa fatta, quando la ceca n. 110 del mondo Renata Voracova ha salvato un matchpoint vincendo poi il secondo set, riacquistando ancora più fiducia nel guardare la Davenport distesa sull'erba a farsi sistemare il ginocchio destro, prima dell'inizio del terzo.

Ma la Davenport, pur a 32 anni, ed ormai giocatrice part-time con un figlio di un anno, è ancora in grado, più di chiunque altra, di produrre i suoi colpi piatti e potenti, se riesce a sistemare in posizione corretta le sue lunghe leve. E, una volta rialzatasi dall'erba, non c'è stato più niente da aggiungere alla tradizione del Cimitero dei Campioni, ché la Davenport ha infine prevalso per 6-3 5-7 6-3.
