A centimeter or two made all the difference for one of Serbia's tennis stars in the second round at Wimbledon, but it would have taken much more than that to keep Novak Djokovic from making Marat Safin look like a renaissance man.
Safin, the 28-year-old Russian powerhouse who has been stalled the last two seasons, suddenly looked like a dominant force again on Centre Court on Wednesday: bombing big serves and making consistently clean contact with his big groundstrokes while hugging the baseline and, above all, covering the baseline.
Meanwhile, Djokovic was bearing little resemblance to the consistent player and clutch server who won this year's Australian Open and has become a strong third in the rankings behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
"In the end, this is another reason to show to the people that this is a very mental game," Djokovic said. "Even though you are feeling great in certain moments and feeling a lot of confidence and motivation, everything can blow away in a second if you are mentally not ready and prepared for the challenge. Today, I had just a block, a mental block. I just couldn't get through and get rid of it."
It would not take long at all for the hydra that now rules men's tennis to lose one of its heads, as Safin kept the suspense to a minimum by beating the third-seeded Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
"I had to play really well, had to be concentrated from the beginning," Safin said. "He's under pressure and fighting for number one at the end of the year and has to win matches. For me, nobody expects anything."

Un centimetro o due hanno fatto la differenza per una delle star serbe nel secondo turno di Wimbledon, ma a Novak Djokovic sarebbe servito molto più di questo per impedire a Marat Safin di sembrare un uomo rinato.
Safin, il ventottenne colosso russo impantanatosi negli ultimi due anni, mercoledì è improvvisamente sembrato di nuovo una potenza sul Centrale: bombe di servizio, estrema pulizia nello sfiorare le righe con i colpi da fondo e, soprattutto, copertura del campo.
Per contro Djokovic aveva ben poco in comune col solido giocatore ed ottimo battitore che quest’anno ha conquistato l’Australian Open diventando la terza forza nel ranking alle spalle di Roger Federer e Rafael Nadal.
"Alla fine questa è un’ulteriore dimostrazione di quanto nel tennis conti la mente," ha detto Djokovic. "Anche se in certi momenti stai benissimo e senti grande fiducia e motivazione, tutto può essere spazzato via in un secondo se non sei mentalmente pronto e preparato alla sfida. Oggi ero bloccato mentalmente. Non sono riuscito a superarlo e a liberarmene"
Non sarebbe passato molto tempo prima che l’idra che attualmente comanda il tennis maschile perdesse una delle sue teste, avendo Safin azzerato la suspence nel battere la terza testa di serie Djokovic per 6-4, 7-6 (3), 6-2.
"Ho dovuto giocare davvero bene, concentrato fin dall’inizio," ha detto Safin. "Lui è sotto pressione ed in lotta per il numero 1 di fine anno, e deve vincere incontri. Da me invece nessuno si aspetta alcunché."
