LONDON — Wimbledon took a distinct turn toward another Roger Rafa-dominated major event when world No 3 Novak Djokovic was ousted yesterday, 6-4 7-6 (3), 6-2 by Marat Safin.
The Australian Open champion in January and second to Nadal in 2008 results, Djokovic has firmly inserted himself with Federer and Nadal in the game's ruling triumvirate.
The Serb's loss will not be shattering news for Federer and Nadal, pals who are not overly friendly with him.
Except for Safin at the 2005 Australian Open and Djokovic in Melbourne this year, Federer and Nadal have won every Grand Slam title for more than four years.

A 2007 Wimbledon semi-finalist, Djokovic was slated to face Federer in this year's final four.
"That Novak lost doesn't make my day any better," said Federer (believe it, if you so choose) after his 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Robin Soderling.
Safin, 28, has worked and competed hard all year, but has not been rewarded for his efforts.
He began the match hitting the ball cleanly and was soon imposing his big hitting on unusually ineffectual Djokovic. "He did not impress me with his game today," No. 75-ranked Safin said. "I could read his serve. I could return. I could stay with him from the baseline."
Djokovic, conceding he might be "mentally tired" from all the tennis this year, said, "He was just better than me. I had a very bad day, and that's it."
Safin retains his well-publicized ambivalence about Wimbledon. "The strawberries are too expensive [about 50 cents for each one in the players' restaurant]," he said jokingly. To the good, he added, "thanks to the people who made the courts slower."
Lleyton Hewitt was happy for Safin. "I played him in Las Vegas [winning 6-2, 6-1] in March," the 2002 champion said. "I kind of felt sorry for him. He was terrible. For him to be able to come out and turn it around in a big tournament, it's fantastic."

Wimbledon ha preso una decisa svolta verso l’ennesimo dominio della coppia Roger-Rafa dopo la sconfitta del numero 3 mondiale Novak Djokovic, battuto ieri da Marat Safin per 6-4 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Campione dell’Australian Open a gennaio e secondo solo a Nadal nei risultati del 2008, Djokovic si è stabilmente affermato con Federer e Nadal nel triumvirato che governa il gioco.
La sconfitta del serbo non sarà una notizia devastante per Federer e Nadal, amici che non sono eccessivamente in confidenza con lui.
A parte Safin all’Australian Open 2005 e Djokovic a Melbourne quest’anno, Federer e Nadal hanno vinto ogni titolo dello slam per oltre 4 anni.

Semifinalista a Wimbledon 2007, Djokovic sembrava destinato ad incontrare Federer negli ultimi 4.
"L’eliminazione di Novak non mi rallegra la giornata," ha detto Federer (credeteci, se volete) dopo la sua vittoria per 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3) su Robin Soderling.
Safin, 28 anni, ha lavorato e combattuto duramente per tutto l’anno, ma finora non era stato ricompensato per i suoi sforzi.
Ha iniziato il match colpendo la palla con grande pulizia e ben presto ha imposto i suoi colpi pesanti su un Djokovic insolitamente inefficace. Lleyton Hewitt è felice per Safin. "L’ho incontrato a marzo a Las Vegas [vincendo 6-2, 6-1]," ha detto il campione del 2002. "Ero dispiaciuto per lui. Ha giocato in modo orribile. Ma il fatto che sia riuscito a cambiare le cose in un grande torneo è fantastico."
