Here is how to beat Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon: serve so perfectly that the piratical Spaniard never gets the slightest chance to break you and then pounce on one of his rare mistakes to break him.
It's not easy,though: the perfection and the pouncing are the hard bits. But for three-quarters of an hour on Court 1,Ernests Gulbis ensured that his eminent opponent, one of the finest returners of serve in the world, did not have a way into the match.

In a first set lasting 47 minutes, the unsung young latvian gave up just 4 points on his serve.Nadal was not troubled on his own serve,either: as if the match was a throwback to the 1970s , there was not a single break point until the 12th game, when Nadal suddenly found himself in trouble. The Spaniard defended a series of deuces, but Gulbis kept up the pressure and when the last year's runner-up hit a forehand long he found himself a set down.

Nadal was in trouble on his serve early on the second set as well, but pulled himself together and instead it was Gulbis who started to make mistakes.

The key factor in Nadal's succesful quest to get back to the hotel in time for the kick-off was his tactical nous. Nadal dropped yards back from the baseline to receive.
The message to the grandees of men's tennis is clear: never underestimate the importance of beating Ernests.

Ecco come battere Nadal a Wimbledon: servire in maniera così perfetta che il pirata spagnolo non può avere la minima chance si breakkarti e poi approfittare di uno dei suoi rari errori per breakkarlo.
Non è facile,tuttavia: la perfezione e l'astuzia per approfittare sono le cose più difficili da attuare. Ma per tre quarti d'ora sul campo numero 1,Ernests Gulbis si è garantito la possibilità che il suo illustre avversario,uno dei migliori alla risposta, non avesse chance di farlo.
In un primos et durato 45 minuti,il giovane lettone ha ceduto solo 4 punti sul proprio servizio. Nadal non ha avuto anche lui nessun problema nei suoi turni di battuta: cosicchè il match pareva somigliare ad un match anni '70, nessun break point fino al dodicesimo gioco, quando Nadal si è improvvisamente trovato nei guai. Lo Spagnolo ha difeso un paio di 40 pari, ma Gulbis ha aumentato la pressione e quando il finalista dellos corso anno ha sbagliato un dritto si è ritrovato sotto di un set. Nadal è stato in pericolo sul proprio servizio anche all'inizio del secondo ma ha resistito ed è stato invece poi Gulbis ad iniziare a commettere errori.
Il fattore chiave del successo di Nadal che aveva fatto richiesta di essere inserito epr primo sul programma per tornare in tempo in albergo per il calcio d'inizio di Russia- Spagna , è stata la tattica. Nadal ha fatto qualche passo dietro la riga di fondo per ricevere.
Il messaggio ai grandi del tennis maschile è chiaro : mai sottovalutare l'importanza di battere Ernests.
