Upsets, like most things, seem to come in threes. Andy Roddick last night followed Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic out of the tournament when he was beaten 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 in the second round by Serbian Janko Tipsarevic.
While the American's defeat certainly counts as one of the growing number of shocks at this year's Championships, it should not have been too much of a surprise to those who have watched Tipsarevic trouble higher-ranked players. He pushed Roger Federer to five long sets at this year's Australian Open - a match the world No1 finally took 10-8 in the final set - and knocked Andy Murray out of Queen's two years ago. His agility and invention both along the baseline and around the net make him dangerous on any surface and he seemed to have no problem returning Roddick's famed serve yesterday.
Roddick has twice been a finalist at Wimbledon but came to this year's tournament less well prepared than usual after being sidelined during most of the clay-court season by a shoulder injury, which robbed him of match practice. His ambitions, however, must have stretched far beyond the second round and he was clearly furious with himself afterwards. "Am I angry and disappointed with myself? Absolutely," he said. "Any chance I got I pretty much just choked it. That's tough to deal with. I could sit here and try to dance around it all night but you guys watched it," he said. "I just didn't make anything out there. Zero, zero, zero. I put myself in a position to win that match in straight sets. It's the second year in a row that I've just blanked.

The large gap left in American tennis by the successive retirements of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi remains and it was never realistic to expect Roddick, a player of relatively limited talent, to fill it

Andy Roddick ieris ha seguito a Maria Sharapova e Novak Djokovic essendo stato eliminato dal torneo con un 6-7 ,7-5 , 6-4 , 7-6 al secondo turno dal serbo Janko Tipsarevic. Mentre la sconfitta dell'americano è una delle tante sorprese quest'anno ai Championship, non dovrebbe sorprendere molto il risultato di Tipsarevic, che seguita a dar fastidio a giocatori più alti di lui in classifica. Ha costretto Roger Federer a cinque lunghi set quest'anno agli Australian Open -un match che il numero 1 del mondo ha alla fine vinto 10-8 al quinto- ed estromesso Andy Murray dal Queen's due anni fa. La sua agilità e insieme le invenzioni da fondo campo e nei pressi della rete fanno di lui un giocatore pericoloso su ogni superficie e non è parso che avesse problemi ieri nel rispondere al celeberrimo servizio di Roddick.
Rossick,che è stato finalista due volte a Wimbledon ma è arrivato a questo torneo meno preparato del solito a causa del suo infortunio alla spalla e la conseguente scarsa preparazione di match- Le sue ambizioni, comunque,andavano ben al di là del secondo turno ed era difatti furioso con se stesso : “Sono arrabbiato e deluso da me stesso? Assolutamente” ha affermato. “Ogni opportunità che ho avuto l'ho sprecata. E' difficile da affrontare, non ho fatto niente. Zero,zero,zero. E' il secondo anno consecutivo che mi metto nelle condizioni di vincere la partita in tre set, e mi impedisco di vincere”.
Il grosso gap lasciato nel tennis americano con i ritiri di Sampras e Agassi rimane intatto e non cera niente di davvero reale da aspettarsi da Roddick,un giocatore di talento relativamente limitato, da costruire.
