Mario Ancic, the last man to defeat Roger Federer at Wimbledon - in a major first round shock six years ago - is lurking dangerously ready to inflict more misery on the world No 1, providing they both win their fourth rounds matches on Monday.
Ancic, who won 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, was among the top 10 seeds on his last visit to The Championships in 2006 but arrived here this year unseeded following a bout of glandular fever which kept him off the tour for six months and led to a misleading ranking of 43.
He said after his 3hr 11min battle that he had been dreaming of returning to Wimbledon as he worked out in the gym trying to regain his fitness after is injury. "I have so many happy memories here," he said. "And I wanted some more. This was an unbelievable match and there were only a couple of points in it because David played brilliantly..
Ferrer, who beat Ancic on the grass of Rosmalen earlier this month on the way to notching his seventh career title and won their only other meeting at the 2006 Australian Open, is regarded as one of the best returners in the game but the Spaniard could not find a way to break the serve of the Ancic who sent down 23 aces against five from his opponent.
Breaks of serve early in the first two sets suggested that Ancic was on the way to a routine victory but Ferrer responded magnificently to take the third set tie-break and had six chances to break in the fourth set before bowing out after another breaker.

Mario Ancic, l’ultimo uomo capace di sconfiggere Roger Federer a Wimbledon, causando una grande sorpresa in un primo turno di sei anni fa, sembra pronto a infliggere un’altra delusione al numero uno mondiale, sempre che entrambi escano indenni dai loro prossimi match. Il croato, uscito vincitore in quattro lottatissimi set nella partita giocata contro David Ferrer, era incluso nelle prime dieci teste di serie solo due anni fa, ma quest’anno si e’ presentato come outsider, soprattutto a causa di problemi di salute che lo hanno costretto a ben sei mesi di inattivita’ e portato al numero 43 delle classifiche. Ferrer, che aveva appena battuto Ancic nel torneo su erba di Rosmalen, poi vinto dallo spagnolo, era uscito vincitore anche nell’altro precedente, nell’edizione del 2006 degli Australian Open. Il giocatore iberico e’ considerato uno dei migliori “ribattitori” del circuito, cio’ nonostante non e’ riuscito a trovare il modo di strappare il servizio al gigante croato, capace di servire ben 23 aces. Due break conquistati da Ancic gli hanno consentito di portatrsi in vantaggio di due set, e in quel momento il match sembrava finito. Ferrer invece ha portato il match al quarto set, dopo essersi aggiudicato il terzo grazie a un tie break giocato in modo sublime, e si e’ arreso solo nelle fasi finali, quando stava sopraggiungendo l’oscurita’. Queste le parole di un raggiante Ancic: “ Per me e’ gia’ un sogno semplicemente giocare questo torneo, dopo cio’ che ho passato. Questo e’ stato un match fantastico deciso su due punti, David ha giocato in modo incredibile”
