WIMBLEDON, England - Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic, two of the WTA Tour's most attractive personalities and the winners of the year's first two Grand Slams, are out at Wimbledon. So, too, are the American men, as hopefuls Andy Roddick and James Blake were put out to pasture. Then there's the boastful Serbian, Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, a surprise second-round casualty. But the tournament still boasts the planet's two most dominant men, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who are favored to meet in their third straight Wimbledon final. Also hanging around are both members of the vaunted Williams family, Venus and Serena, who have combined for six Wimbledon titles since 2000, and could also meet in the final, which would be the third time they've done so. The most attractive semifinal, should it occur, would be between Federer and two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin, the giant Russian who swung mightily at the Swiss and upset him at the 2005 Australian Open. Since then, Safin has been unable to regain that form, but after grinding on the practice courts, in the gym and even in qualifying matches for the first five months of this year, he's finally had a substantial breakthrough, winning three consecutive matches for the first time this season, upending world No. 3 Djokovic and then knocking out Italy's Andreas Seppi 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Poi c'è stato il serbo dalla lingua lunga e campione dell'Australian Open, Novak Djokovic, ad essere eliminato a sorpresa al secondo turno. Ma il torneo vanta ancora la presenza dei 2 giocatori più dominanti, Roger Federer e Rafael Nadal, che hanno il favore del pronostico per affrontarsi nella loro terza finale consecutiva a Wimbledon. Ancora in corsa anche le sorelle Willliams, Venus e Serena, che hanno vinto in tutto 6 titoli a Wimbledon dal 2000 e potrebbero affrontarsi in finale per la terza volta nella storia. La semifinale più interessante, dovesse verificarsi, sarebbe tra Federer ed il vincitore di 2 titoli dello Slam Marat Safin, il gigante russo che ha dominato lo svizzero agli Australian Open del 2005. Da allora, Safin è stato incapace di raggiungere tale stato di forma, ma dopo aver lavorato sodo sui campi, in palestra, e persino nei turni di qualificazione, per i primi cinque mesi dell'anno, ha finalmente raggiunto risultati degni di nota, vincendo tre partite consecutive per la prima volta nella stagione, eliminando il numero 3 Novak Djokovic ed in seguito l'italiano Andreas Seppi.
