Andy Murray continued his fine form on the American hard courts last night when he beat Carlos Moyà, the experienced Spaniard, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati.
The British No 1, seeded eighth, was in trouble when he trailed the former world No 1 by a set and 2-0, but recovered strongly to make it back-to-back semi-final appearances in Masters Series events and set up a clash with Ivo Karlovic — the conqueror of Roger Federer in the previous round — after the Croat defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber, of Germany, 7-6, 7-6.
Murray’s win last night also meant that, when the ATP rankings are updated on Monday, he will climb to a career-high of No 7, and will overtake Andy Roddick, the world No 6, if he beats Karlovic today.
Moyà had played twice on Thursday, finishing off a surprise win against Nikolay Davydenko, the No 4 seed, before beating Igor Andreev, another Russian. But if Murray had thought that the Spaniard would be tired from his exertions, he was mistaken as Moyà broke the Scot in the first game, winning seven of the first eight points. With his trusty forehand immediately in its groove, Moyà, 31, attacked at every opportunity and, with Murray struggling for rhythm and consistency, he broke again to lead 4-1. Murray experienced a worrying moment in the sixth game when he appeared to twist his troublesome right knee, but he shook off that concern to hold serve before Moyà held again to take the first set.
Things went from bad to worse for Murray at the start of the second set as Moyà broke his serve in the opening game. And when the Spaniard held two break points in the third game, Murray’s prospects were bleak.
But the 21-year-old has not climbed back inside the world’s top ten by giving up and, after holding serve for 2-2, he broke in the next game after some rare mistakes from the Spaniard. That game turned the match on its head and Murray’s confidence began to soar as he broke again for a 4-2 lead and held the advantage to level the match.
Moyà, perhaps now beginning to feel the exertions of the previous 24 hours, began to tire and a forehand error gave Murray the crucial break in the first game of the deciding set. That, effectively, was that as Moyà’s head dropped and Murray, playing close to his best, took control and romped to a 4-0 lead. From there, Moyà had no way back and Murray completed victory with a flicked backhand. Such was Murray’s eventual dominance that he won the third set for the loss of only ten points.
With Federer’s defeat by Karlovic having opened up the top half of the draw, Murray will be confident of reaching his first final in a Masters Series event, yet more indication that he is on track to close the gap to the top three — Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. On form, he should get to the final and would undoubtedly relish a rematch against Nadal after the Spaniard edged him out in two tough sets in the semi-finals in Toronto last week and thrashed him at Wimbledon last month.

Andy Murray supera l’ostacolo Moya e approda in semifinale
