Hanna had the final say but not before Roger Federer had stopped Novak Djokovic dead in his tracks and Andy Murray, the revelation of the US Open so far, had made sure Rafael Nadal will find it difficult to sleep soundly to night.

Djokovic, having spoken too impulsively by his own admission to the crowd after his victory over Andy Roddick, is too intelligent to fall into another trap so he refused to be drawn on how much that broo-haha afftected his performance today but, throughout the first set he looked flat, mentally and physically. The young Serb insisted exhaustion, both physical and mental, was the reason for him being unable to produce his best and he refused to say anything bad about the hysterically-pro Federer crowd, "No, I think they were pretty fair," he said. "It was obvious they were on his side because he’s ex-No. 1 and still the second best player in the world and the defending champ here and people love him. He deserves that support."
No question about that. And Roger will get more of it if he goes on playing like this. The first hint that this was going to be a vintage Federer day came when he cracked two clean forehand winners in the very first game. The forehand has been looking a little ragged of late but it was back to his glorious best here and when he used it pass Djokovic down the line , it gave him two break points in the fourth game which he quickly converted.
The set became a formality after that but Djokovic was slowly coming to terms with the situation and began powering that huge forehand all over the court. Suddenly Federer was under pressure and some bad volleying plus a couple of backhand errors cost him his serve to go 3-1 down in the second. He did break back but Djokovic was looking ominously determined at this stage and broke again as the wind picked to take the set 7-5.

Obviously Federer, his crown still on his head, was delighted and he was quick to pay tribute to the fans for their support.
"I don’t count on it because I’m not American but I feel a little bit of a New Yorker right now," Federer said. "So it does feel great. I definitely appreciate the effort from the fans. I had some tough moments against Andreev and again today and they were definitely my side which is always very nice for me." […]

Hanna ha avuto l'ultima parola ma non prima che Roger Federer fermasse Novak Djokovic sulla sua via e che Andy Murray, la rivelazione degli Us Open finora, si assicurasse di far dormire sonni poco tranquilli a Rafael Nadal.
E' stata una giornata affascinante anche se tronca a Flushing Meadows e una che sarà ricordata per il modo in cui l'incredibilmente popolare campione in carica ha ricominciato a giocare da Federer.

Djokovic, avendo parla in maniera troppo impulsiva per sua stessa ammissione alla folla dopo la sua vittoria su Andy Roddick, è troppo intelligente per cadere in un'altra trappola quindi si è rifiutato di attirare troppi "boo-haha" che hanno afflitto la sua prestazione oggi ma, durante tutto il primo set è apparso piatto, sia mentalmente che fisicamente. Il giovane serbo ha insistito dicendo che la stanchezza, sia fisica che mentale, è stata la ragione per la quale non è riuscito a giocare al meglio e si è rifiutato di dire qualsiasi cosa negativa contro la folla istericamente pro-Federer,"No, penso che siano stati corretti," ha detto. "E' ovvio che loro siano stati dalla sua parte perchè è l'ex n°1 ed è ancora il secondo miglior giocatore del mondo, è il campione uscente e le persone lo amano. Si merita questo supporto."
Nessun dubbio al riguardo. E Roger ne usufruirà ancora di più se continuerà a giocare così. Il primo segno che si sarebbe visto il vecchio Federer è arrivato quando ha colpito due vincenti puliti di dritto nel primo gioco. Il dritto è parso un pò arrugginito ma è ritornato gloriosamente al meglio qui e quando l'ha usato per passare Djokovic sulla riga, gli ha dato due palle break nel quarto gioco che ha velocemente convertito.
Dopodichè il set è diventato una formalità ma Djokovic stava lentamente rientrando nei ranghi e ha cominciato a scagliare quel potente dritto da tutte le parti del campo. Improvvisamente Federer era sotto pressione e con alcune brutte volèe più un paio di errori di rovescio gli sono costati il servizio che l'hanno portato 3-1 sotto nel secondo set. Ha fatto il contro break ma Djokovic sembrava proprio determinato a quel punto e gli ha ritolto il serivzio a favore di vento portato a casa il set per 7-5. [...]
Ovviamente Federer, con la sua corona ancora sulla testa, era felicissimo e ha pagato velocemente il suo tributo ai fan per il loro supporto.
"Non conto su di esso perchè non sono Americano ma sento devo dire che mi sento un pò Newyorkese al momento," ha detto Federer. "Quindi è fantastico. Apprezzo decisamente gli sforzi dei fan. Ho avuto alcuni momenti duri contro Andreev e anche oggi e loro sono stati dalla mia parte, il che è sempre un piacere per me." [...]
