TOKYO (AP) -- Juan Martin Del Potro upset top-seeded David Ferrer in straight sets on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Japan Open.
Argentine Del Potro, seeded fifth, beat the Spaniard 6-1, 7-5, denying the defending champion a chance to repeat at the $869,000 ATP event.
"It was a very tough match against one of the best players in the world," said Del Potro. "He won here last year and has been playing well."
Del Potro will play either Frenchman Richard Gasquet or German Rainer Schuettler in the semifinals.
After cruising through the first set, Del Potro broke in the eighth game of the second set to take a 5-3 lead. Ferrer got back on serve, but Del Potro broke in the final game, hitting a crosscourt forehand winner on match point.
"I tried a lot things," said Ferrer. "But Juan Martin is very confident. He's been winning a lot of matches lately and played very well today."
Ferrer had won his two previous meetings with the 20-year-old Del Potro, who has won 28 of his past 29 matches. […]

TOKYO- Juan Martin Del Potro ha sconfitto in due set la testa di serie numero 1, David Ferrer, e accede così alle semifinali del torneo di Tokyo.

L’argentino Del Potro, testa di serie numero 5, ha battuto lo spagnolo per 6-1, 7-5 impedendo così al campione in carica di difendere il titolo conquistato l’anno scorso.

“È stato un match duro contro uno dei migliori giocatori al mondo” ha detto Del Potro, “lui ha vinto l’anno scorso e stava giocando bene nell’ultimo periodo”. Ora per Del Potro si profila una semifinale contro il francese Gasquet o il tedesco Schuettler.

Dopo aver dominato il primo set, Del Potro ha fatto il break nell’ottavo game e conduceva 5-3. Ferrer si è ripreso il servizio ma Del Potro ha fatto il break nel game decisivo con un dritto incrociato vincente sul match point.

“Ho provato varie cose oggi”, ha detto Ferrer,“ ma Juan Martin è in gran forma, sta vincendo molte partite e oggi ha giocato bene.”
Ferrer conduceva due a zero negli scontri diretti contro il 20enne argentino, che però ha vinto 28 delle 29 partite giocate.[…]
