Great Britain’s inglorious loss in its Europe/Africa Zone Group II tie against Lithuania has prompted calls for “swift and decisive” action by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA). Matt Trollope.
Great Britain lost the tie – played in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius – despite leading two rubbers to one and playing a team where all players bar one were ranked outside the world’s Top 500.
The team now faces a playoff tie against Turkey to avoid relegation to the lowest tier of Davis Cup competition.
It was Great Britain’s fifth consecutive Davis Cup tie defeat under the captaincy of John Lloyd.
LTA player director Steve Martens told the Associated Press that the association was yet to make decisions regarding the team.
“Clearly we have to be swift and decisive. But it is very important that in the heat of the battle you don’t do anything emotional,” he said.
“We have to be looking at this together with the captain, reviewing where we were with our players, where we were with our selection, where we were with the preparation of the players. That is exactly what we’ll do over the next few days and the captain will be a full part of that.”
Great Britain was missing its top two players in Andy Murray (World No. 4) and Alex Bogdanovic (No. 155).
The team was represented in singles by British No. 3 James Ward and No. 4 Daniel Evans, ranked No. 249 and 252 respectively, plus doubles players Ken Skupski and Colin Fleming.
