The 18-year-old, who grew up in Ellicott City, posted the impressive round one win in 72 minutes firing three aces while Sprem struggled with serve hitting eight double faults for the match.
"I'm so excited, it was amazing," Capra said in an interview with her sponsor, Wilson Tennis, after the match. "I actually wasn't that nervous surprisingly. I think playing the Juniors here helps you a lot."
Capra, who is currently No. 371 in the WTA rankings, won the US Open wild-card play-off in Florida where she currently lives and trains. She will now meet 18th seed Aravene Rezai of France in the second round on Thursday.
"I just need to play like I did today and keep my composure and make her move a little, and just play my game," Capra said about her next match.
The only other American female to advance on day two was Bethanie Mattek-Sands who ousted Spaniard Anabel Medina Garigues 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. She will play German Andrea Petkovic in the next round who upset 17th seed Nadia Petrova of Russia.
American wildcards Jamie Hampton and Shelby Rogers forced their opponents to three sets. Hampton was knocked out by 22nd seed María José Martínez Sánchez of Spain 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 while Rogers lost a close 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 6-3 battle to Peng Shuai of China.
Other American wildcards who fell were Coco Vandeweghe and Chelsey Gullickson. Vandeweghe was crushed 6-1, 6-0 by German Sabine Lisicki and Gullickson was thrashed 6-1, 6-1 by top seed Caroline Wozniacki. American veteran Jill Craybas also went down to Yvonne Meusburger 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
In other results, Anne Keothavong of Great Britain was brushed aside 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 by Taiwanese Chan Yung-Jan while South African Chanelle Scheepers crashed out to Uzbekistani qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3, 6-4.
