ATP, from Spanish quality to American quantity
TENNIS - There are more than 1900 players in the world ranking system, representing one hundred nations. The USA take the lion's share with 135 representatives, followed by France with 118 and Argentina with 113. 102 tennis players are enough for the fourth spot for Italy, preceding Germany by one player. There are five nations with more than 100 players in the ranking system. Spain is sixth with 93 players, but if we only take in consideration the top 100, the Iberians are clearly world leaders. There are five Italians in the ATP's top 100 (obviously 5 percent and fifth place amongst nations), in a portion of the rankings that has 39 nations represented, with the lion's share going to Spain with nearly three times more players than Italy (14). France and the USA follow with 9; Argentina 7; Germany and Russia 5 (like Italy); Croatia 4; Belgium, Czech Republic and Serbia 3; Austria, Colombia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Ukraine 2; the list is closed by nations with one athlete, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Finland, Japan, Great Britain, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Luxembourg, Holland, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Slovenia, South Africa, Sweden, Taipei, Uruguay and Uzbekistan.
The situation for Italy is similar in the top 200 with 11 players (5.5% and fifth place amongst the 47 nations participating in the national rankings, with Germany overtaking Italy compared to the previous one). France and Spain share the leadership with 21 players, followed by Germany with 18; Argentina e USA 14; Italy 11; Russia 9; Czech Republic 6; Brazil, Croatia and Holland 5; Australia, Belgium, Japan, Serbia ed Ukraine 4; Austria, Canada, Colombia, Poland, Slovakia and South Africa 3; Great Britain, Israel, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Rumania, Slovenia, Switzerland and Taipei 2; Bielorussia, Bulgaria, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay and Uzbekistan 1.
Italy follows the same trend in the top 300 with 16 players present (5.3% and a confirmed 6th place out of 54. France is the undisputed leader with 31 players or 10% of the total number of players. Second place goes to Spain with 25 and Germany completes the podium with 23 players. Just off the podium is Argentina (20) just beating the USA(19). Italy improves in the 301-400 range with 24 players (6 percent and fifth place out of 61 nations shared with the USA).
