Il broncio della Sharapova e il sorriso amaro della Wozniacki (The Age)
TENNIS – We have a selection of stories from the Australian press. Marcos Baghdatis a bad guy? He has only broken four racquets in 25 seconds… During a press conference, asked if it was getting harder to make her smile in media conferences, Maria Sharapova showed a winning return. Caroline Wozniacki can cheer up after loss: she was named ambassador of the year by the International Tennis Writers Association. Ubitennis staff
BAGHDATIS A BAD GUY? DON'T BANK ON IT
STRAIGHT to the pool room of priceless media releases for yesterday's missive from the Bank of Cyprus Australia, headed, ''What's all the racquet?'' Billing itself as Marcos Baghdatis' major Australian sponsor for the Australian Open 2012, the BoCA clearly had some ground to make up on its investment after the world No. 44 departed in the second round in a blaze of broken racquets. It has done so by acquiring ''one of the elusive four tennis racquets that were at the receiving end of the Cypriot tennis star's wrath''. Baghdatis visited the bank's Rialto Towers offices, with managing director George Tacticos joking that staff had wondered ''if perhaps everything should be bolted down and anything that was breakable should be put away''. All were relieved to discover that Baghdatis was ''just a nice guy; friendly and genuine'', unless of course you're an ''elusive'' tennis racquet. The mangled item in question will be framed and displayed at the BoCA headquarters, with plans to auction it for charity.
DON'T ASK SILLY QUESTIONS
PERHAPS Maria Sharapova shrieks because she's as mad as hell and she's not going to take it any more. The Russian, who contests her 16th grand slam quarter-final today, and is somehow still only 24, has had TV viewers reaching for the mute button again this year, but has revealed she wishes she could turn down certain noises too. Asked if it was getting harder to make her smile in media conferences, Sharapova responded: ''Well, maybe you should start asking cheerful questions and I'll have cheerful answers.'' She then zeroed in on her interrogator, saying: ''You always ask silly ones … I know you do. You're Italian!'' Whether this was cause and effect she did not explain, but the next question kind of backed up her point.
Journalist: What do you consider your age is when you look at yourself?
Sharapova: My what?
Journalist: Your age.
Sharapova: My age?
No wonder she squeals.
WOZNIACKI TAKES HOME THE WRONG GONG
CAROLINE Wozniacki's reign as No. 1 caused a deal of controversy not of her own making, but the Dane will not have to worry about those pesky questions now. With her quarter-final loss to Kim Clijsters, she will drop off the top of the rankings. But Wozniacki did have one victory for the day. She was named ambassador of the year by the International Tennis Writers Association, an award for cooperation with the media and general, all-round niceness. She was presented with an engraved sugar bowl. Must have been a bittersweet day.
SWISS MISTER FINALLY JOINS 1000 CLUB
ROGER Federer's quarter-final against Juan Martin Del Potro yesterday was his 1000th tour-level match, making him one of just eight male players to achieve the feat. Jimmy Connors leads the way with 1427 matches. The others are Ivan Lendl, Guillermo Vilas, John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Ilie Nastase. Federer on his 1000 matches: ''It's 1000 matches, not 1000 wins. Big difference.'' Federer was delighted to see Rod Laver and Roy Emerson, all-time greats of the game, in the crowd at Melbourne Park yesterday. Readers will recall Federer crying when Laver came out to present the Australian Open trophy to him in 2010. He has alwasy been highly respectful of the legends who came before him. ''It's nice to see the greats of the game come out to see my generation,'' said Federer.
Roger ogni volta che impatta sembra in posa per una foto, io ho bisogno di photoshop.
