WOZNIACKI RUBS IT IN

There's not much mucking around once you're knocked out of a grand slam. On Tuesday, Caroline Wozniacki lost her quarter-final to Kim Clijsters, and her No. 1 ranking. Yesterday, as Clijsters tried to hold on in the first set against Victoria Azarenka in their semi-final, Wozniacki was on her way home, and kind of rubbing it in. ''Having a foot massage in the lounge in Dubai airport,'' she tweeted. ''Feels amazing after a 14-hour flight.''

BRYAN SET TO WELCOME NEW BABY

So it's all come down to this for Bob Bryan - a baby due tomorrow and a doubles final to play. ''Crunch time,'' as Bob put it yesterday. The Bryans came through with a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau, as Michelle Bryan watched from home in Miami, despite being warned not to turn on the TV. ''She's on bedrest now. She's not getting out of bed. She turned it off in the third set because she was starting to feel a couple of small contractions. I've been telling her, 'Don't watch the matches, it will get your heart rate going and you might spit that baby out','' said Bob, who'll be jumping on a plane on Sunday morning, getting him in by Sunday night, Miami time. ''She's getting big, man. She's huge. She showed me her stomach. It doesn't even look human. This thing, I don't know how it's staying in there,'' he said. ''I'm feeling pretty good. She's been so happy and supportive of what we're doing. That makes it really easy. It's going to be a war zone in that room when that baby's coming out. I'll psych up on the plane ride home.''

HINGIS' ADVICE TO WOZNIACKI: TOUGHEN UP

Martina Hingis has been back in town this past week, playing in the legends event 13 years after winning her third Australian Open title and getting up close and personal with some local wildlife, including this bandicoot. Now 31, Hingis has never enjoyed comparisons between herself and Wozniacki, but she stuck up for her this week, while encouraging her to start playing with more aggression against the big hitters. ''Today you just can't let yourself get pushed back. That's what she has to do. She has to try to move in, step forward, otherwise there is always going to be somebody coming on top of her at a grand slam,'' said Hingis, who has recently begun working with five juniors in a ''global consulting'' role. ''You have to have the mentality to try to keep doing it in practice so it becomes automatic,'' she said. ''You can't just do it two, three points in a match.'' Hingis' career was overseen largely by her mother, and she conceded that she was not ''the best listener'' as a youngster, perhaps hoping that her charges are.

KVITOVA'S BOYFRIEND IN SEMI-FINAL

Today, Adam Pavlasek will play Australian's own Luke Saville in a boys' semi-final. Adam who? That would be the 17-year-old boyfriend of potential world No. 1, Petra Kvitova, 22. Pavlasek raced upstairs to watch Kvitova play Maria Sharapova after winning his match yesterday. ''I hope that she wins,'' he said before insisting that, while being in the same city at the same time was rare, both were here for business reasons only. ''I do get nervous, a little bit sometimes. But me and Petra played tennis here and nothing more. We go straight to play the matches. But to watch her, last year especially, it's been good. It's inspiring for me, always inspiring.''
