E' Serena Williams la regina del 2012. Vittoria a Wimbledon, alle Olimpiadi, agli Us Oper e il terzo Masters in carriera, arrivato senza perdere un set. A Istanbul è diventata la più anziana a fregiarsi del titolo di "Maestra" e completato una stagione da ricordare. Ha giocato 62 partite, eguagliando il suo record. Ne ha vinte 48 delle ultime 50. Da maggio ha perso solo da Razzano al Roland Garros (unica volta in cui si è fatta rimontare dopo aver vinto il primo set nel 2012) e da Kerber a Cincinnati. Ha chiuso la stagione con 58 vittorie e 4 sconfitte (.935). Dal 1990, solo Justine Henin ha registrato una miglior percentuale di successi in una singola stagione (63-4, .940).

Il Masters è il suo settimo titolo in stagione: ha vinto su tutte le superfici, come nessun'altra. Il 7 è un numero che torna nel suo 2012. Sette come i game lasciati a Sharapova in finale. Sette come le partecipazioni al Masters. Sette come i milioni di dollari di prize money guadagnati, una soglia superata solo da Serena e Azarenka, la giocatrice che ha guadagnato di più in una singola stagione nella storia della Wta.

Sharapova è rimasta in partita praticamente per cinque game. Ma dal 3-2 e servizio Williams, il punteggio non è mai stato in discussione. E la russa ha potuto solo migliorare il totale dei game vinti contro Serena, mai più di 4 nelle ultime tre sfide. Si allunga così a 12 la serie di vittorie consecutive di Serena contro la numero 1 o 2 del mondo: l'ultima top-2 capace di batterla è stata Svetlana Kuznetsova, nei quarti a Stoccarda nel 2007.

Un break basta a Serena per chiudere il primo set. Il break arriva nel quinto game, alla prima opportunità. Il settimo è un game durissimo, il più lungo del match (16 punti), in cui Masha deve fronteggiare due palle del controbreak: salva la prima con la chiusura a rete, ringrazia Serena che sotterra la risposta di dritto sulla seconda. Il bilancio di 13 vincenti a 3 a questo punto della partita spiega bene come Serena cerchi di tirare sempre e a tutta. per questo gli scambi che superino i 4-5 colpi sono abbastanza rari. Con il sesto ace Serena completa il 6-4 in tre quarti d'ora. 19-11 il suo bilancio vincenti-gratuiti, 7-9 quello di Sharapova che finisce sempre più per subire il gioco dell'avversaria.

E il break ottenuto in apertura di secondo set, alla prima chance con lo smash a campo aperto dopo uno scambio da sei colpi dominato fin dalla risposta, è solo un'ulteriore conferma di quanto Williams sia in controllo del match. Anche il colpo migliore della siberiana sfigura: con il dritto fa la metà dei vincenti di Serena.

Sharapova si affida al servizio per evitare il doppio break, ma nei suoi turni di battuta Serena non concede nulla. La russa non ha mai la chance di breakare e si arrende allo strapotere dell'avversaria. Chiude con la risposta vincente di dritto e riconferma di essere lei, come recita uno striscione, "la dea dei campi".
